October 23, 1959. "Bloomingdale's in Hackensack, New Jersey. Clothing, children 1 to 3. Raymond Loewy, client." This, kids, is a department in a department store, a place people went back when "shopping" meant actually leaving the house. 4x5 inch acetate negative by Gottscho-Schleisner. View full size.
Although this looks like a nice clothing shop, I can't help recollecting the days of being taken for that dreaded activity, *shopping.* Mother chooses outfits, child is required to try on one after another, making for a day that was dull, irritating, uncomfortable and far too long.
