Jerry Lewis performed often at the Chez Paree night club in downtown Chicago. He and my dad Mel soon became good friends. One day in 1946 Jerry visited Shutan Camera Co. to buy his very first movie camera for an important occasion: the birth of his first child Gary. That purchase may have spawned Jerry’s love for film making. This mid-1940s photo shows him in our Washington Street store with arm around manager Irving Kaye, Shutan employee Manny Reeder, and Mel Shutan on the far right. Jerry and my dad were both in their early 20s. Jerry Lewis became a family friend and continued to buy camera equipment from Shutan thru the 1990s. Leica and Nikon were always his choice in 35mm equipment. View full size.

It's December 2, 1944, and my wife's Aunt Vicki, second on the left, and her girl friends (you could call women "girls" back then and get away with it) are celebrating something at the Iceland Restaurant, 1600 Broadway in New York. "Dining - Dancing - 3 Shows Nightly." The absence of men (I see just two on the dance floor) illustrates that about 13 million of them were serving in the military.
I know Aunt Vicki was writing to a sailor somewhere among those 13 million. My guess is the young lady on the left was the reason for the night out -- possibly for an engagement party -- because it appears she has slipped out of the chair closest to the camera to pose so sweetly for the shooter from Planetary Photo, 311 W. 34th St (printed on back of the one dollar photo). Also some of her friends are focusing on her. I'm happy to say today, at 89, Aunt Vicki is thriving in Delaware, has a good sense of humor and a generous nature as great as always. View full size.

My mother, pregnant with me in Wakefield, Quebec. This was taken perhaps in July or August, 1956. I was born in mid-September. My father, who was an artist and had lived in Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side, moved my mother up from Ottawa to Wakefield where he planned to start an artist colony.
The studio was an old log cabin. This is in the house. The window covering is made from string and nails, like string-art but on a grand scale. The cat is either Henry or Midge. The night they brought me home from the hospital, Henry and Midge took up watch at head and foot of my crib. Mom is now 85. View full size.

I took my camera and tripod to work one night in 1974 as a Vancouver trolley bus driver. This is a photo at the old (Chilco Street) Stanley Park Bus Loop with a 1948 Brill trolleybus.
In the background, and through the bus, you can see the Stuart Building, which was illegally demolished at 4 am a few years later. To obtain this shot, the camera was placed on the tripod, and the shutter was locked open. With all the bus lights turned off, the bus was originally parked at least a bus length further back.
The reason for all the sparks is this was a passing wire in the loop that was rarely used, and so the metal curve segments on the trolley wires oxidise, and if you power through them you get some great sparks. I pulled the bus forward, created the sparks, and parked it, turned on all the bus lights, and continued the exposure long enough to capture the image of the bus. But not for too long, as I wanted the Stuart Building to show through. So it was a single exposure, although it looks like a "double exposure". I used a Konica Autoreflex 2 camera with Kodachrome film. The loop had incandescent street lights.

This was on my Granddad's farm, near Blandinsville, Illinois, in 1954. He is showing me the interior of his clock, how the pendulum swings back and forth and where the chime hammer falls. The winding key is in the face and it is a little after 10am. I was never a night person. The clock now sits on my parent's TV stand and it will come to my house some day. I will have to find a special place for it. View full size.

This is me, Edward Mitchell, in 1955 on the front porch of my paternal grandfather's home on South Third St. in Waco, Texas. Left to right is George Washington Mitchell, 88, who became a widower in 1954 after over 60 years of marriage. These are three of his five sons, not including my father who is in the house and the middle son Ross who died in 1952 at 52. Lloyd, 48, high school teacher and football coach, Arthur, 61, Ford dealer since 1925, and Ralph, 51, Inspector for Texas Dept. of Health. Granddaddy had a massive heart attack in summer of '54 and lingered at the point of death for three weeks. He then recovered, went back home and lived to be 93. I spent virtually every Saturday night with him between '55 and '61 when the man my mother and aunt hired to live with him left for the weekend. We'd watch Gunsmoke, People Are Funny, Lawrence Welk and Groucho Marx on his metal '54 Firestone TV. I'd play his Victrola and he'd tap his cane in time to the music. I'm retired after working 30 years in the oil and gas industry. View full size.

Persian Room, Hotel Sir Francis Drake, San Francisco, June 18th 1944, Table 6. I know all this because this is a souvenir photo taken at the Drake, the date and place is on the folder it came in. Looks like Mom & Dad out with the kids (they don't look like brothers to me), perhaps a big night out before one or both of them shipped out to for the War? View full size.

JeepsFive 4 axle EMD units we nicknamed jeeps. Looks like double track not sure where maybe Texas?
[Maybe there's a clue in the first word of the caption. - Dave]
O. Winston Link?Sure looks like his work, but I'm not sure he ever shot in other than 4x5. Could this be one of the negatives his second wife Conchita stole?

Filling your cup with NightrainThis apparently was the SP 5802 GP9 delivered in March of 1959. They were painted grey with what was called the "red bloody nose scheme." If so, it was renumbered in 1965 then emerged renumbered again 1975 as SP 3818. Looks like the four locos are pulling a string of trailers via piggyback service.

Stopped For ServicingHanging near the handrails on the left side of the locomotive is a "Blue Flag" and blue lantern to signify that the train cannot be moved or any car or engine come closer that 150 feet until the person that placed that flag has finished their work and personally removed the flag.
Car inspectors are possibly walking both sides of the train and if one of them needs to get near or under the equipment they HAVE to be assured that nothing will MOVE!
Pigs really can flyThe use of truck trailers on railroad flat cars (TOFC traffic) has a murky history, but as early as 1926 the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railway ran entire trains of what they called “Ferry-cars,” flat cars bearing truck trailers. The Chicago Great Western also offered “pig” service in the 30s. But it was left to a remarkable guy named Ben Heineman (President of the CN&W Railroad 1956 to 1972.) to develop the concept fully. It was often a frightful sight to see these trailers rocking and rolling on a train running at timetable speed, but to my knowledge TOFC trains had an excellent safety record.
SLOPretty sure this is a northbound train at San Luis Obispo.
Golden Pig ServiceTrailers on flat cars are called "Pigs" by railroads. (Slang for "Piggyback"). The Southern Pacific Railroad was a big player back then in the movement of trailers on flat cars.
Their name for the service was called "Golden Pig", and a smiling pig was emblazoned on some trailers advertising the service.
Flash to today, and these trailers are part of a combined movement of goods across the nation which includes mostly containers from overseas.
The "Pigs" are now some of the hottest trains on railroads. They carry packages for Fedex, UPS, and the Postal Service on time sensitive schedules.
1959-60The pic appeared in the July 1960 issue of Trains, credited to Steinheimer. Like the man said, the lead GP9 was built 1959.
Train 373 was the Coast Merchandise West, LA to SF overnight in 12 hours. The "Golden Pig" trailers with the jolly-pig logo appeared in 1981-82.
