Lovely and spiritedShe was something. I was privileged to photograph her small but beautiful mausoleum at Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, when I visited there in March of 2017. Over the ornate bronze doors is carved the name LILLIAN RUSSELL MOORE. More than 150 deer live in the cemetery grounds and they wander freely, sleeping at night hunkered next to tombstones. They're a wonder to behold, not afraid of people and happy to have their picture taken. A local man brings food for them every day as he has done for years.

Taken at the World's Fair in July 1939, my very first trip to the fair. I stayed there all day and into the night, where I listened to the Hal Kemp orchestra play to the happy dancers on the dance floor. I remember taking in many of the exhibits, such as General Motors, Westinghouse, Con Edison, and seeing the famed parachute tower.
This photo was taken with a very small folding camera which was given away by the Manischewitz Bread Company if you sent in three wrappers of their bread. The camera was so unique, it accepted 00 size film, making it difficult to find a processor for that film. View full size.

Après-ApronsOf all the minor things I have thrown away and ought not to have, the greatest was a paint-stained carpenters' apron marked “Carmel Builders’ Supply.” Giveaways back in the day, carpenters' aprons have local appeal for collectors, and sometimes two-digit phone numbers as well, and provide epitaphs for defunct local businesses. In a city like Carmel-by-the-Sea, where most businesses are now oriented toward the tourists, such homely advertising is a reminder that we used to be a real town.
Similar nostalgia inducers include yardsticks and dry cleaners’ wooden hangers, but carpenters' aprons win on patina, hands down.

On a road trip in 1977 I visited Las Vegas and stayed for one night. I don't gamble, so I took Kodachrome slides of the incredible neon signs and watched the passing parade of people. This sign was all in motion, with sequencing lights making the fire hose appear to be spraying water to cool down the overheated slot machines.

Ship of aliases In November 1901, Ocean Steamship Co. acquired and renamed her the City of Savannah as she plied the route between New York and Charleston. She became part of the New York and Porto Rico Steamship fleet in January 1906 and was now known as the Carolina.
The captain of the U-151 allowed the crew and passengers to abandon ship before he sank her with shellfire. Most were rescued even though the lifeboats had to endure a squall that night. Only eight passengers and five crew were lost, possibly when their motor dory was swamped. Not a lucky ship as she had numerous mechanical issues and survived a 1913 collision with the liner Cleveland in New York Harbor.

Time capsuleThis photo is chock-full of awesomeness. The art deco vanity, frilly curtains seen in the mirror, doilies carefully positioned on the vanity, grandma's shiny ribbon skirt and gold-trimmed blouse, her bright red lipstick and big smile...it's all fantastic. It looks like a fur coat is thrown across the bed, so maybe she's getting ready for a night out on the town. I like the way the photographer carefully positioned himself/herself just out of range of the mirror, too.
DecorLove, love, love that vanity. And I remember those decorative tin wastebaskets from my grandfather's house. Nowadays, trash cans are plastic and boring. Great pic!

Many Chickens Die

Washington Post, November 3, 1917.

Many Chickens Die in 3 Alarm Fire

Krey, Price & Co., Burned Out
— Big Crowd at Blaze.

Several thousand pedestrians in the downtown section of the city witnessed a spectacular blaze, which destroyed the business establishment of Krey, Price & Company, produce commission merchants, at 933 Louisiana avenue northwest, last night shortly after 9 o'clock.

The fire was discovered by Policeman L.C. Davis and John Everett, a watchman. In a short time eleven engines were pumping water to extinguish the blaze. Within twenty minutes Fire Chief Wagner announced that the blaze was under control.

After the fire was out firemen brought out four coops of chickens, many of the fowls being still alive. Others were killed by the smoke or water. Damage to the stock of Krey, Price and Company is estimated at $500, covered by insurance, while the loss on the buildings is estimated at $1,900.

Sailors on liberty, doing what sailors do, at the Pago Pago club. I got this photo at the local flea market, in a box of old photos. View full size.
[Note that the Pago Pago Club photographer had the negative reversed when making the print. -tterrace]
Thank you DoninVaFor completing the picture for me with even more knowledge and info than I could have hoped for, as I was pretty sure it was from the WW2 era, which you have confirmed. You should add Private Investigator to your resume. I appreciate your brilliant insight on military details and for taking the time to respond. Thanks again.
3 Men in a TubI will try to answer OTY’s questions about these 3 Shipmates. As tterrace tells us, the negative is reversed so insignia and ribbons are mirror image as well. My impression is that the date is early in 1945. They are wearing blue uniforms so they are not in a warm weather area and I’ll bet they are on the Pacific Coast in one of the innumerable Pago Pago Clubs that dotted the ports and Navy towns.
Old Salt on the right is a Petty Officer 1st Class, a Yeoman (administrative); the guy on the left is a Petty Officer 1st Class, a Pharmacist’s Mate (now called Hospital Corpsman). The middle guy is a mystery but he is a Petty Officer of some sort because a wing of the eagle is visible on his sleeve.
The ribbons tell us quite a bit. Our Old Salt on the right has a Good Conduct Medal ribbon (3 years service) on the top; he appears to have an American Defense Service Medal ribbon with star (for service during 9/8/1938 to 12/7/1941), an American Campaign Medal ribbon, and an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal ribbon with 4 battle stars. He has clearly been in the middle of it!
The middle Swabbie has the American Campaign Medal ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal ribbon without stars. He may not have seen as much service as the other two but he does look like he could be the Fleet Boxing Champion.
On the left, the Doc has on his sleeve a service stripe for 4 years service. His ribbons are obscured but there may be an American Defense Service Medal ribbon and an Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal ribbon with battle stars. There’s probably a Good Conduct Medal ribbon hiding under the thing in the pocket.
Noticeably missing are ribbons for the World War 2 Victory Medal, which was authorized by Congress on 6/6/1945. Those serving in Europe when that war ended would have received the medal before those serving in the Pacific, but it would have taken time to get the ribbons into the Fleet and awarded.
Also missing are the Honorable Discharge patches, an embroidered eagle awarded to those honorably discharged at war’s end and worn on the right side of the Navy jumper (left side in this photo). So, I think they have not been discharged but are no doubt thinking about that happy day.
BTW, a family member served in the Navy in the Pacific and I have several night club photos like this that need scanning and submitting to Shorpy.
Intriguing PhotoAfter studying this picture for several minutes, I put "Pago Pago Club" into my search space and it turned out that this locale in American Samoa had a series of several pictures and this very same one was included. With the knowledge and investigative abilities of Shorpy readers, you could probably solve a few details such as the year this was taken and perhaps even the circumstances. Note the cigarette packs of Chesterfields and Lucky Strikes seem like the old ones without filters and the drinks were flowing like water. A Navy expert could date the uniforms, etc. This photo sure brings back memories of my older long-gone uncles, cousins and friends who were all in various branches of the service. Very nostalgic.

Posted by FargoMarc - 09/20/2011 - 1:14am -

This is my grandpa, Aaron Betsch, in his barbershop in Streeter, ND. The date on the calender says 1928, so he would have been 24 and fresh out of barber college.
He is a classic example of an American success story. He was the son of dirt-poor, German-Russian immigrant farmers and only had a 3rd grade education. He decided there was more to life than breaking your back under a hot sun, so he worked his way through barber school (Mohler Barber College, Fargo, North Dakota. It's still there!) and quickly bought his own shop. My grandma did the bookkeeping, and he retired as a very successful businessman. He is proof that you can do anything if you set your mind to it.
He passed away in 1995, and he had some great stories from back in the day. He said he used to keep his barber shop open until 2 a.m. or later on Saturday nights, because the farmers would come to town, get drunk, and then need a shave and haircut for church the next morning. So they'd all leave the bar and come across the street to his shop and wait their turn.
The shop had a coal-stove for heat, and in the winter, he had to wake up at 3:00 every morning, walk the two blocks or so to his shop and throw more coal in the stove, otherwise the hair tonics and lotions would freeze in their bottles. This was every night, despite how cold or snowy the weather was. He once said to me "They call it the good old days. Well, I tell you, boy oh boy ... I sure wouldn't want to go back to those days!" Master switch and master patternIt looks like each iron outlet has its own pilot light to indicate that the power is on. I wonder if perhaps all the outlets were controlled by that switch near the door - that way, somebody could shut down all the irons in the room with one switch, when laundry time was over, or at night.
That far ironing board support also sports either the carpenter's pattern, or the piece in the "kit" that was labeled (if it was made elsewhere and shipped to the site). The top line pretty clearly says "IRONING BOARD", but the bottom line is more garbled - "CENTRAL VT"? - perhaps a misspelling of Sinton.

Brown's Bay Provincial Park, Ontario (near Kemptville), c. 1959. Me with my boyfriend, Michael, again. Who can resist a man who wears socks and shoes with his bathing suit? The "romance" lasted until my mother remarried and we moved to Ottawa, in 1963.

UPDATE! I got an email from Michael last night, out of the blue. It's been about 45 years since we last saw each other. He wrote "What a way to trigger some great memories from my young years in Kemptville. I believe that is me in the first picture but not in the second [the "Lover's Quarrel" one]; I guess you had another boyfriend [I responded that the WAS only one boyfriend for me, back then and it was Michael!]. You were responsible for my first spanking in kindergarten (actually having my hand slapped) when I got upset that you weren't sitting beside me in class."
I didn't remember that at all... But it was nice to know that at SOME point in my life I was a heartbreaker...
The Feeling Is MutualThe attraction must have worked both ways, since you are also wearing socks and shoes. Maybe it was just an attempt to protect your feet from those frigid, even in summertime, Canadian waters???

I love this one. This is my Dad's (on the left) first night on the town in the states after more than three years fighting with the 27th ID in the Pacific, around October 1945, near Seattle. He arrived in Washington state from Japan that day after being part of the first occupational forces. These guys are happy to be back! View full size.
Dad and his buddiesCazzorla's Dad and his buds are giving up a few details about themselves. Dad is an infantry lieutenant and has the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. In 1947 all recipients of the CIB were retroactively awarded the Bronze Star Medal; many former infantrymen never got the word or were too busy creating new lives to care about it, but I hope your dad received his.
The man in the dark shirt has no insignia, but that is an officer's shirt. Next we have an officer from the Quartermaster Corps. On the right is what appears to be a captain in the Ordnance Corps; his ribbons are indistinct. His 27th Infantry Division patch is clearly visible; a New York National Guard division, the division participated in the invasions of the Gilbert Islands, Saipan, and Okinawa, then were part of the Occupation forces.
The Shasta Cola bottles, assortment of glasses, two ice buckets, and the packs of Camels and Luckies suggest they've been celebrating for a while. After what they went through they deserved a party.

WowImpressive work. My goal for the afternoon is to find at least one of records not on this list.
Wow, wowAKabaker, you even found three of them, thanks!
I added them, plus I added the few information I could determine of some of the others.

Fork Mountain School, West Virginia (historical location), October 31, 1911.
Scanned from a silver/sepia print.
My grandmother, Myrta Shafer, all of 24 years old at the time, is the school marm standing by the tree, next to the girl who seems so intensely grim. I know that my grandmother was a teacher, and as I have been unable to identify anyone else in the photo, I assume that this was her class (my father, her oldest child, was not born for another six years). 1911 was the first year that costumed trick-or-treating was recorded in North America, so I doubt these rural children were preparing for a night of confectionery extortion. Perhaps their stolid expressions simply reflect their prospects, growing up in the devastated tinderbox that was Tucker County in 1911. View full size.

Colorized from this Shorpy original. I decided to take the challenge of making a night time photo in colors. this photo is so powerful and cinematic that I had to hold back and not over do the coloring. I hope I got it right. View full size.

It's ladies night and business is brisk! Three generations of them, no less. It's around 1960, probably at Christmas, again in Crown Point, Indiana. This is from a squareish slide so I think it might be from some sort of medium format camera. Since I can't quite figure out how to get my scanner to change its format, you're missing the lower part of the bodies: one sitting on a bar stool, one kneeling on a bar stool, and one pregnant.
