On a visit to New Orleans in May 1976, I stayed at the Hummingbird Hotel, which was like a scene from "A Streetcar Named Desire." The window at the front of the room looked out onto St. Charles Street, and every so often a streetcar would roll by. On a warm, humid night, the open windows of the streetcar afforded a cooling breeze and a great view of the City. And they still do on the St. Charles line. View full size.

Persian Room, Hotel Sir Francis Drake, San Francisco, June 18th 1944, Table 6. I know all this because this is a souvenir photo taken at the Drake, the date and place is on the folder it came in. Looks like Mom & Dad out with the kids (they don't look like brothers to me), perhaps a big night out before one or both of them shipped out to for the War? View full size.

When Ford opened its new Broadmeadows plant in suburban Melbourne on 27th January, 1960, it was a big deal. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. R.G. Menzies, opened the plant at 2:35 pm, and a trailer train tour of the plant followed. A black tie evening dinner party at the Menzies Hotel in Melbourne wrapped up the day. In this photo on the trailer train from left to right are Henry Bolte, premier of the State of Victoria, and his wife; my mother, Betty; Prime Minister Menzies; my father, John McIntyre; and unknown. This is one of 15 photo prints left in a hotel room in Minnesota, date unknown. The photos were rescued years or decades later from the lost and found. The photographer may be Tom Brudos, whose name appears on the photo sleeve. A letter in the same bundle, addressed to Dick Brudos, is dated 1955. I google image searched "flat top mountain Alaska" in an effort to locate this unique chop-top geographic lump - and found a mountain with just that name, but the photos were taken from the terrestrial side and the landscape didn't look smooth and almost "mowed" like this does. So, where is this? Here are more photos from the same excursion. View full size.
Update: JFlash, a Shorpy reader, has identified the geographic location (I incorrectly guessed Alaska) of the flat-top mountain in this photo as Thule, Greenland (and the mountain as "Mt. Dundas"). He suggests that all of the photos may be from Greenland. And I think he may well be right. I'm on a new path now! Thanks for the great info, J.

A sequel (or prequel) to the Dressed to Smoke photo. This was found in another box from the same photographer.
I found out this and others in the set were taken somewhere in Europe, possibly in Zurich since there is also a slide of the Hotel Storchen (still extant) in the same box.

This is one of 15 photo prints left behind by a guest of the Best Western White Bear Country Inn in Minnesota. Who knows when? Rescued from the hotel's lost and found in 2009. Photo sleeve says "Tom Brudos." A letter in same packet (which doesn't mention the photos) is postmarked 1955 and is addressed to Dick Brudos. The scenes appear to be from Alaska - but where? Here are more photos from the same excursion. I'll post one more which has a rather unique geological feature. View full size.
Update: Another photo in the series has been identified by JFlash, a helpful Shorpy member, as Thule Greenland. With that new information, my guess that this series of photos was taken in Alaska is likely incorrect. More research! Thanks for the help J.

This photo shows my mother’s parents (Marie was last seen here) two years before they were wed if the date hand-written on the picture margin is correct. In 1921 both would have been approximately age 30. He was born in Bialystok (which is now part of Poland) in 1891, supposedly under the name of Issar Derrish which became Americanized to Isadore Weinstein, probably at the behest of his older brother Benny who invited the teenage Issar to join him in New York City around 1905. They subsequently formed Weinstein Brothers Cloak and Suits, with “Izzy” as the craftsman and Benny as the salesman. When Benny suddenly died in the 1930s that company fell apart.
My guess is that this picture is at some vacation resort hotel, possibly in the Catskills. Beyond that, I have no clue. I would not consider sitting in a rocking chair and reading while a guy smoking a cigar was sitting on that chair’s arm with cigar smoke inches from my face to be a wonderful dating activity. I know for a fact that they married in 1923. That makes me question if this is a honeymoon photo, and not a dating photo. View full size.

From the collection of film and 4x5 glass negatives I recently purchased. We believe that this is the photographer, as well as the boy's father. We are not sure where these photos were taken, but a number of them can be identified as Trenton Falls, although by then the park was in private hands. A dam had been built, choking off the flow to the ravine and eliminating the series of waterfalls that made it an international attraction. The water was diverted through a pipe to a turbine a mile or so below to generate electricity, and it remains in operation. The hotel and all the other amenities were removed, and the area was closed to the public. View full size.

My father (left) chats with his brother-in-law Abe, who was the husband of his oldest sister, in a set of Adirondack chairs, blocking full view of a perfectly lovely, two-tone, 1956 Plymouth Belvedere. I haven’t a clue who owned the Plymouth. We had a 1952 Studebaker at that time. Abe lived in a New York City apartment that had no place to park a car. Location is probably some Catskills resort hotel. Date is late 1950's.

Posted by BostonBridget - 03/15/2017 - 10:57am -

My great-grandmother, Delia Bridget and her baby, Simon, taken in downtown Boston at Loring Studios in 1899. She came over to Boston from Ireland alone when she was about 16 years old. Just a few years later, she sent a copy of this photo back to her family in Galway to show that she was doing well with her new life in South Boston. Sadly, Delia's 45 year old husband collapsed and died from heatstroke after working on the elevated railroad tracks in Boston, leaving Delia a widow with eight children to raise alone. She immediately got two jobs in downtown Boston cleaning office buildings and another as a chambermaid at a hotel. To save the few pennies that train fare would cost, she chose to walk the extremely long walk from South Boston into downtown Boston to her jobs through all kinds of harsh weather. Most of Delia's children lived long lives and also settled in Boston. Simon became a longshoreman and then, a merchant marine and drowned at age 40 in the Great Lakes in 1939. His brother was convinced that it wasn't accidental, as Simon was labor organizer during a particularly violent time. Delia's last residence was a rented apartment over a flower shop on Dorchester Street in South Boston where she enjoyed listening to her favorite radio programs like The Shadow and The Lone Ranger. My grandmother was by her bedside with her when she passed away at 78 years old; she was buried in a plot by her son, Simon.
