High TeaHad traditional High Tea at the Empress on a trip to BC in 1968 which, distressingly, was only 30 years after this now 72-year-old photo was taken.
It still looks wonderfulI have been there twice, but never stayed there. I WILL return soon! I looove this city and the Empress is the icing on the cake.

I believe this photo was taken in Calaveras County, California, in the early part of the twentieth century. I know nothing else about it. View full size.
Jumping Frog Jubilee?Angels Camp, also known as City of Angels and formerly Angel's Camp, Angels, Angels City, Carson's Creek, and Clearlake, is the only incorporated city in Calaveras County. The population was 3,004 at the 2000 census. It lies at an elevation of 1378 feet.
Mark Twain based his short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" on a story he claimed he heard at the Angels Hotel. The event is commemorated with a Jumping Frog Jubilee each May at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds, just east of the city. Because of this, Angels Camp is sometimes referred to as "Frogtown."

LocationI am fairly certain we are looking across Pennsylvania Avenue NW, where it intersects with 21st & Eye Streets toward what is now the Hotel Lombardy, but which I believe was an apartment building in 1947. The year seems accurate largely because of the 1947 Buick Sedanet prominent left of center, behind the man walking along the sidewalk. The streetcar is already old in this shot, but that series was still running. The Taxi is a 1946 GM model, I believe also a Buick.

Taken in Chicago in about 1895. John Dominic "Yank" Cunningham (shown here with his son William) operated a tavern/restaurant in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood on West 111th Street in the Southwest Chicago at that time. He passed away in 1907. Yank was my great aunt Rose Ann Jackson's brother-in-law.
"Yank" Cunningham infoI am looking for more information, especially pictures, of James Dominic "Yank" Cunningham. Specifically pictures of the saloon, restaurant, hotel he ran at 11th & Sacremento in the Chicago neighborhood of Mt Greenwood at the turn of the century. Please post below if anyone has anything. Photo stamped on back "Photograph by Associated Screen News Limited, Banff Springs Hotel, Banff, Alberta" with a handwritten "Sept. 1941" above. Original print measures 13 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches, with a hard-to-scan matte finish.
I did some minor digital cleaning (dust and creases) and converted from faded sepia to grey for better contrast. Found at a Northeast Ohio flea market in a box of old pictures and purchased for $1. It was simply an interesting pre-war photo with great scenery, people, and clothing; take special note of the John C. Reilly -like mug front and center. I bet he was a character! View full size.
WhodunitWe have the makings of an Agatha Christie novel, at least one. There is the usual cast of characters including 2 parish priests. What about the fellow in the back turned away from the camera, what's he hiding?
Miss Marple is in the rocker top left, overhearing the conversation of the two women at the wall behind her. The woman with the hankie says, "But, mother, Reginald told me that he did not know the murdered woman." Mother responds, "Of course, he always says that. Remember what happened to Gladys."

If you are a fan of old arcade machines, this photo is for you. It is a wonderful trade show display from 1941. Probably in a ball room in some old Chicago Hotel.
Front and center, Exhibit Supply was a well known amusement device manufacturer for many decades. Pinball, postcard vendors and personality testers were just some of the machines they made. If you look carefully there are some other manufacturers along the sides of the room including Metropolitan Amusement Co. and Holly Mfg Co. A music system manufacturer is visible but the name is partially obscured by some of the other machines.
This original 8x10 print was purchased from Dick Bueschel, an author who wrote many books in the coin-op field. I was fortunate enough to buy several great images from Dick before he died in 1998. View full size.

This is on the Kemptville Creek, behind our house on Clothier Street. I am wearing my first pair of real skates and am standing with Mr. Moffatt, our landlord. In the background is the back of the Clothier Hotel.
Nothing has changed in the background over the years. The gas station is now a car repair shop. To the left of us, just out of view is the old brewery which had been vacant for over 70 years when this photo was taken. Rumour has it that a microbrewery is moving in. View full size.

Posted by Championhilz - 02/17/2010 - 9:48am -

This CDV of Thomas C. McMackin was taken about 1865 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. McMackin owned the Washington Hotel in Vicksburg, and he operated one of the finest restaurants in the city from the building. McMackin made a name for himself with the unusual manner in which he informed guests of his menu. He would announce his offerings in a loud voice: one patron wrote that during his visit McMackin proudly announced "Now then, here is a splendid goose! Ladies and gentlemen, don't neglect the goose and apple-sauce! Here's a piece of beef that I can recommend! Upon my honor you will never regret taking a slice of the beef. Oyster-pie! Oyster-pie! Never was a better oyster-pie seen in Vicksburg. Run about, boys, and take orders."
When asked once why he had such an unusual method of announcing his menu, McMackin replied that he had once owned a restaurant in Jackson, Mississippi, that was frequented by members of the state legislature. So many of them were unable to read that he resorted to shouting the menu to let them know what was available. View full size.
