August 1942. Washington, D.C. "Grocery store at 1426 11th Street N.W., across the street from Mrs. Ella Watson, a government charwoman." 4x5 inch acetate negative by Gordon Parks for the Office of War Information. View full size.
It was a common claim in cigarette advertising in the 70s and 80s, but I'm surprised anyone was concerned about it in 1942.
"Irritating tars and resins" were another matter, and Old Gold famously made rather outlandish claims about the ratio of coughs to the shipping capacity of railroad rolling stock.
"Pick one up and smoke it sometime" was the line in I remember in the Edie Adams Muriel Cigars TV commercial from my 1950's childhood.
I've never seen those double-headed ice cream cones before, but I'd sure like to know where I can find them, if they're even still made. Do you know how annoying it is to have one scoop fall off and onto the ground/carpet when you're trying to eat it? Having them side by side makes SO much more sense.
I'll take chocolate and then chocolate.
I lived for seven years about a half mile from the Bond Bread Bakery in Northeast Philly. When the west winds prevailed our neighborhood smelled heavenly. When the wind blew from the east - well, to the east was Exide battery, which didn't have much of an odor, but the dust from that place softened the paint on my car.
I remember it well and did not realize that it has slowly been phased out of existence while I was not paying attention. However, the nifty "Duble Heder" 2 scoop (side by side) ice cream cones seen on the window sign can still be had by Joy cone company although I have not seen any like that since I was very young. It is amazing to think of all the products that disappear while one is living his life and not noticing.
